01Is it right for you?

A good fit if you understand dogs and like teaching people

Dog trainers teach owners as much as dogs: private lessons in clients' homes, group classes and puppy programs. You need real skill and patience, but very little equipment, and happy clients send their friends.

You'll like it if

  • You've trained dogs and love figuring out behavior
  • You're patient and good at coaching people
  • You're happy working evenings and weekends
  • You keep learning and want to get certified

Think twice if

  • You get frustrated when people don't practice
  • You'd rather not deal with nervous or reactive dogs
  • You want a set nine-to-five
  • You're looking for a business you can start without learning first

10Questions

Common questions

Do I need a license to train dogs in Wales?

Usually not, beyond registering your business. A few states license trainers who keep or train dogs without the owner present, and boarding dogs at home can need a kennel license. Check with your state and city.

Do I need to be certified?

No, but it helps. Certification shows clients you have hands-on experience and follow a code of ethics, and it often lets you charge more.

Should I start with private lessons or classes?

Most new trainers start with private lessons, which need no space. Group classes come later, in a rented room, a park or a partner's store.

Can I work with aggressive dogs?

Only once you have the experience. Serious aggression and fear cases need advanced skills, and many trainers refer them to a behavior specialist.
