01Is it right for you?

A good fit if you love cooking and planning meals for others

Busy families, new parents, seniors and people with health goals pay to have real meals ready. You can work as a personal chef, cooking a week of meals in each client's kitchen, or run a meal prep service that cooks in a licensed kitchen and delivers. The first is simpler to start; the second can grow bigger.

You'll like it if

  • You love cooking and planning menus
  • You're organized with shopping lists and schedules
  • You like getting to know your clients
  • You can cook for special diets

Think twice if

  • You only want to cook what you feel like
  • Long days on your feet are hard for you
  • You'd rather not keep food safety records
  • You can't drive or carry groceries

10Questions

Common questions

Do I need a license to be a personal chef in Ireland?

It depends. In many places, cooking in a client's own kitchen with groceries they pay for is treated differently from selling food you made elsewhere. Ask your local health department before you start.

Can I cook meal prep at home and sell it?

Usually not. Cooked meals need a fridge, so home food rules rarely cover them. Most meal prep services cook in a licensed or rented commercial kitchen. A few places, such as some California counties, allow a small home meal business with a special permit.

Who pays for the groceries?

Personal chefs usually shop for each client and bill groceries on top of their fee. Meal prep services include the food in the price per meal.

How many meals is one cook date?

Personal chefs often cook about ten to twenty servings in one visit, packed and labeled for the week.

What about allergies?

Ask every client about allergies and diets in writing, label every meal, and keep the ingredient list for each dish.

Costs and earnings are estimates from the sources below, checked October 2026. Fees and rules change: confirm with the authorities named in this guide. This guide is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice.
