01Is it right for you?

A good fit if you're a stylist or barber who wants your own clients

A mobile stylist or barber brings the salon to the client: busy parents, seniors who can't travel, offices and wedding parties. You skip chair rent and set your own hours. In most US states and some other places you'll need a hairdressing or barber license first, and some places have extra rules for working outside a salon.

You'll like it if

  • You're licensed, or ready to train for a license
  • You like one-to-one time with clients
  • You want to set your own hours
  • You don't mind driving between appointments

Think twice if

  • You'd rather clients come to you
  • Carrying gear in and out is hard for you
  • You don't want to manage bookings and payments
  • Cleaning up in other people's homes bothers you

10Questions

Common questions

Do I need a license for mobile hairdressing in Galway?

In every US state, yes: cutting hair for pay needs a cosmetology or barber license. In Canada it depends on the province, and in the UK no license is needed. Some places add rules for working outside a salon, so check with your licensing board.

Can I do color at a client's home?

It depends on where you work. Some places limit home visits to cuts and styling and don't allow color or chemical services outside a salon. Check before you offer them.

Do I need a van?

No. Most mobile stylists carry a kit into the client's home in a car. A salon van is a bigger investment and often needs its own license and inspection.

How do I charge for travel?

Many mobile stylists include a local area in their prices and add a travel fee or a minimum charge beyond it.

Can I start part-time?

Yes. Many stylists keep a salon job and see mobile clients on days off, then go full-time once their book is full.
