01Is it right for you?

A good fit if you love telling stories with a camera

Video is everywhere, and most couples and small businesses don't have the skills or the time to make it well. A videographer films the day, then edits it into a short film people watch again and again. Weddings usually pay the most per project; business videos can bring steadier work.

You'll like it if

  • You love editing and telling a story
  • You stay calm when a moment happens only once
  • You're happy working weekends
  • You like learning new gear and software

Think twice if

  • You want regular weekday hours
  • Long days on your feet carrying gear are hard for you
  • You'd rather not buy gear before you earn
  • Deadlines and client changes stress you

10Questions

Common questions

Do I need a license to be a videographer in Australia?

Usually there's no special license. You register your business and follow local rules. Some parks and cities ask for a film permit, and flying a drone for paid work needs a drone pilot certificate.

What gear do I need first?

A camera that films well in low light, a zoom lens, a gimbal, wireless microphones, a tripod and a fast computer. Good sound matters as much as the picture.

Can I use any song in my videos?

No. Use music you have a license for, such as tracks from a music library made for video, or platforms may mute or remove your film.

How long does editing take?

Much longer than filming. A wedding film can take days to edit, so plan your calendar and delivery dates around it.

Should I team up with a photographer?

Many videographers get bookings through photographers and offer couples a combined package.

Costs and earnings are estimates from the sources below, checked October 2026. Fees and rules change: confirm with the authorities named in this guide. This guide is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice.
